“You Are Enough. Leaving behind the past to embrace the future. How to stop self doubt and fall in love with your self worth. Believing you are enough.”
Feel like you’re not enough? It’s a lie that so many live with. No-one wants to experience self-doubt but if you happen to find yourself there it’s ok. You and I are alike. I’ve lived it and overcome it and I know you want to overcome it too.
Lean in and listen up as I let you in on some of the ways I’ve learnt to reclaim myself as a woman who is enough. I’ve traded thoughts of ‘I’m not enough’ for ‘I am enough.’
When we are born, we are already equipped with skills that cannot be learned. We are assigned a purpose that cannot be reassigned to anyone else because it’s our individual calling. We are all equipped.
But to understand my story of self-doubt, I need to take you back a little. Back to when I had a dream to work in television.
As a young child I remember being drawn to the Oprah Winfrey Show. I loved what Oprah did and how she did it so much that it brought me to Australia. I arrived here to study Mass Communication so I could achieve my goal of working in television.
I was on the path to achieve my television dream and in my last year of university I completed a work experience program at a national television station. I loved every moment and at the end of the work experience program, the chief of staff at the time told me if I ever wanted to return, I could call him anytime.
I never called him.
I know what you’re thinking, ‘GIRL WHY?? Why did you never accept the invitation?’
I look back and think the same thing.
The reason I never acted upon the invitation is because I didn’t feel worthy. I didn’t believe that I was enough and after completing my work experience program, I went home filled with self-doubt.
Within the entire television station, there was no one who looked like me or sounded like me. I questioned how I’d fit in and was worried I’d mispronounce words due to my Kenyan accent. I allowed my self-limiting beliefs to get the better of me.
And I never pursued a career in television.
You see, for all my school years I was viciously bullied. I was taunted by young girls both in class and on the playground.
They chose actions that were hurtful and cruel and the bullying continued until I finished high school. By then the scars from intense harassment ran very deep. The scars meant that even years later I chose to trade my heart longings for something safe and secure.
So instead of pursuing television I enrolled in a Master’s degree and studied Human Resource Management.
I went on to work in HR until I became a mother and it was during this time as a new mother that I had an awakening and uncovered my true life calling.
It was a process to arrive where I am today but now my life is filled with purpose. And it’s through this purpose-based life work I’ve embraced what I’ve been called to do.
Sometimes we need to see someone who looks like us, sounds like us, comes from the same school or grew up in the same neighbourhood to believe that we too can do it. I work every day knowing someone’s potential might be unlocked through hearing someone else’s story.
This blog, my life coaching and TV series serve a purpose so much bigger than me. If my being visible means another person pursues their dreams and is ushered into their calling, it reinforces everything I stand for; that our individual pursuits have the power to make a remarkable impact on many.
For so long I questioned if I was enough and to be honest those thoughts still sometimes pop up. But I’ve learned to quiet those voices and listen to another voice. For me the voice I listen to comes through my faith in God. It’s a voice that:
-
Replaces negative thoughts with positive thoughts
-
Reminds me that I am enough and have everything I need
-
Leaves behind thoughts of comparison (a topic I will be sharing more with you in the coming weeks)
Say it out loud You Are Enough.
It won’t always be easy to see the impact you are having. Especially when you are simply carrying out your role but who knows the impact you can have and the legacy you can leave behind when you become the person you were always meant to be.
The bullying experience took away so much of who I was meant to be. It took my voice away, my self-worth and what I believed I was created to do; which simply put- is to use all I have within me to impact lives positively.
Through the journey of becoming a mother, I finally learned to find my voice, my purpose and the reason for my existence. What the school years robbed, I’ve gained in leaps and bounds through my new found purpose and I believe you can live a life of purpose too.
Next week I’ll be sharing Part 2 of the ‘You Are Enough Series’ where I’ll be talking about the 4 most common ways we self-sabotage our potential and 3 steps to start chasing your dreams and stop thoughts that say ‘I am not enough’.
