‘It stopped being about what opportunities am I going to miss because of my skin colour to being, who’s going to be lucky enough to work with me.’
In this raw and heartfelt interview, I speak with Eunice Dimbi, an inspirational Real Estate Agent based in Perth, Western Australia who’s wild about helping people find and purchase their dream home.
She considers herself a matchmaker for families looking for the home that is perfect for them.
Moving from Zimbabwe to Australia, Eunice shares about first studying a biomedical degree which saw her working in the dental industry. It wasn’t long before she knew she had to explore her other passion- real estate.
It would be a difficult path into real estate and her attempts to find recruitment were met with rejection and soul shattering comments like, ‘We would hire you but because of your skin colour we just don’t think this will work’.
Despite her self-limiting beliefs that left her feeling self-conscious about her accent and her skin colour, she knew real estate was where she was meant to be so refused to take no for an answer.
Moving forward was made possible when Eunice’s mindset shifted and she says, ‘It stopped being about what opportunities am I going to miss because of my skin colour to being who’s going to be lucky enough to work with me.’
On her unwavering approach to make her Real Estate dream a reality Eunice said, ‘This is my dream. I don’t have a plan B. And this is my passion. This is one of those things that I truly feel that I was made for. And so just truly believing that in myself. That I can do this. That whoever wants to work with me is actually getting the best agent there is. That’s what fuels me’.
Today Eunice is living her dream job as a Real Estate Executive and she shared her best tips about the process of buying a house along with the steps to becoming a homeowner.
Beginner’s tips for entering the property market in Australia
-
Have clarity– Ask why you want to buy a home and make sure it’s a commitment you are able to stick to.
-
Have a deposit– Save your money until you have a deposit that is 20% of the price of the property.
-
Hire a mortgage broker- They speak to banks on your behalf and arrange the best deal for you along with organising your loan pre-approval.
-
Time to house hunt- Once you have pre-approval for a loan you can start viewing properties and attending home opens within your pre-approved budget.
-
Be aware of extra costs- Things like a Settlement Agent- (The person who helps transfer the house into your name), Building and Pest Inspectors who make sure the house you are buying doesn’t have any termite activity or damage and Removalists all incur additional costs so factor these costs into your budgeting.
Now planning to use her experience to help others, Eunice wants to support and mentor those who are living the same rejection from the real estate industry that she once did.
