This has come up in conversations lately with a number of online business owners really struggling with how to do something the “right” way so that they don’t get called out or cause harm.
It feels like we’ve really gone to the extreme now where expectations of each other are so high that we are not allowing any room for error.
Quite frankly it is impossible to make any progress with that kind of pressure but I also see how this is also a privilege to be able to remain silent and watch rather than take imperfect action.
If you are finding yourself in this position, I’d like to offer this as a way forward:
What is the impact of your non-action? It might feel “safe” but it could be costing you serving more aligned clients because they do not know where your values lie when it comes to inclusion. Think about how you might want to take brave action.
Spare a moment to think about those who come from marginalised backgrounds. They do not have the option of checking out or taking a break. They are in the “arena” permanently.
So, what have you pressed pause on that you would love to do but feel afraid? For some of my clients it’s been the fear of sharing their ethics and inclusion pages on their website.
What support could you invest in so that you feel the courage to take action?
You never know how much it might benefit your community or sphere of influence by pressing go on an important values and heart-led decision.
If you need support navigate this, I’d love to support you through a 1:1 DEI consult.
