Professor Jason Arday was once celebrated as the youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge. However, within weeks allegations of plagiarism expanded into extraordinary scrutiny of his career, achievements, personal history, autism and whether he belonged in one of Britain’s most prestigious institutions at all.
His death at just 41 has left behind questions that reach far beyond one academic or one controversy. What does Jason Arday’s story tell us about anti-Blackness, Black hypervisibility and the pressure placed on Black people who enter spaces close to power? Why can the alleged mistake of one Black person so quickly become evidence in a wider argument against diversity, equity and inclusion? And how much room are Black people actually given to be imperfectly human?
This episode explores race, power, disability, the current anti-DEI climate and the difference between legitimate accountability and public persecution. I’m inviting you to look beyond the headlines and consider what Jason’s story reveals about the systems of power we live in.
