1 – Don’t set up a scholarship program unless you’ve done Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work.
Here’s why:
If you haven’t done the work of educating yourself about the challenges, barriers, and setbacks that People of Colour face, then it’s difficult to create safeR spaces and be aware of how to hold space for them.
2 – Make sure the program you’ve created provides a welcoming experience for People of Colour.
When a Person of Colour joins your program via scholarship, they need to feel it’s okay for them to be there because you’ve set up an inclusive community, one where they don’t feel it’s obvious they’re a scholarship recipient but rather part of the community you’ve created. (i.e. you’re already attracting and serving a diverse audience and clients).
