A client choosing to work with you may have a racial and cultural experience vastly different from your own. For many white coaches, that difference can bring up uncertainty: Am I equipped to support her well? Am I a safe person? What if I don’t know enough about their culture?
Those concerns are understandable, but racial difference alone shouldn’t determine who you believe you are capable of coaching.
In this episode, I’m talking about what it takes to coach well across racial difference, including the role of racial literacy, cultural sensitivity, curiosity and continued learning. I also look at why sharing someone’s racial identity isn’t automatically evidence that you’ll support them better, where additional responsibility may fall on you as the coach and why confidence grows through both education and experience.
The goal is to develop the capacity to work with people whose experiences differ from yours without reducing the quality of care, challenge or coaching they receive.
I’D LOVE TO HEAR FOM YOU
